Course Introduction
Hello and welcome to The Stitchery Online!
This is a brand new course that I have developed to help people learn hand embroidery. The stitches I teach are industry basics that will see you right for any kind of stitching that you wish to do; but mostly to equip you with the knowledge and experience required to tackle any of The Stitchery kits, both past and future.
The course is pre-recorded and will cover:
1. My Story: I will tell you a little bit about my 'embroidery journey' - how I learnt to stitch and how I picked it up again in my 30s when struggling with a bout of anxiety and depression. I will show the pieces I started with and some of the pieces I create now, for my Stitchery customers. I am passionate about handcrafts and particularly needlework; I can't imagine life without stitching now and I can't wait to share it with you.
2. Tools Required: I will demystify the tools and kit required for embroidery. Learn the absolute must-haves with a few nice-to-haves together with the equipment I sometimes use to make my embroidery sessions more comfortable and sociable!
3. The Basics: Here we will cover the very basics in stitching including needle sizes, thread weights and fabric weights. I will tell you which thread is best for certain stitches as well as how to ply down or increase the thread you use.
Then we get into the stitches! There is a video for each set of stitches, which will be bookmarked to enable you to find the stitch you need in a hurry when you come to refer back.
4. Outline stitches: to include back stitch, running stitch, stem stitch, split stitch, seed stitch, straight stitch, blanket stitch, chain stitch and whipped stitches.
PRACTISE: A downloadable pattern for you to practise the stitches you've learnt so far.
5. Filling stitches: to include satin stitch, split stitch (filling), brick stitch, basket weave, closed fly stitch, fishbone/herringbone stitch and long and short stitch.
PRACTISE: A downloadable pattern and instructional video to practise the stitches you've learnt so far.
6. Decorative stitches: to include French knots, bullion knots, Colonial knots, woven wheel roses, bullion knot roses, buttonhole stitch and cast-on stitch.
PRACTISE: A downloadable pattern and instructional video for you to practise the stitches you've learnt so far.
7. Next steps: I will talk about colours, fabrics and share a few design tips so that you can start creating your own little Stitchery style embroideries. I will also talk through the kit and equipment I keep in my stash and the little project bag I always have on the go to make waiting rooms and airport lounges ten times more fun!
BONUS CLASS: Create a travel sewing kit with your own hand-stitched needle case and pin cushion.
